Vietnamese Facebook users changed avatar to demonstrate solidarity

The Facebook page "Đồng loạt đổi avatar 3/6 đến 5/6" (Simultaneously change avatar from June 3 to June 5), which had been initiated by a group of overseas Vietnamese students, attracted over 12,000 members after just 4 days on Internet. The number of users attended its finished unique event was even much higher - 30,456

The page and its event were set up to call Vietnamese Facebook users to change their avatars into one unique, which would stylize a Vietnamese navy man holding his firearm next to a sovereignty tower on Truong Sa archipelago with the red background of two Vietnam's east archipelagos (Hoang Sa and Truong Sa) and national flag in the right corner.

The avatar also includes a slogan in Vietnamese and English "Truong Sa and Hoang Sa belong to Vietnam". The page owners explained for the use of the terms "Hoang Sa" and "Truong Sa" in stead of "Paracel" and "Spratly". That is Hoang Sa and Truong Sa are archipelagos which Vietnam has her clear sovereignty, while the archipelagos of Paracel and Spratly include islands which belong to Malaysia and the Philippines. The use of the terms "Hoang Sa" and "Truong Sa" in the slogan means that Vietnam respects her neighbors' sovereignty and just protects her belonging islands.

The campaign was to demonstrate the Vietnamese solidarity against Chinese naval actions in Vietnam's belonging waters in late May 2011. It concluded with a success as the number of Vietnamese Facebook users who changed their avatars was more than the final statistics, and it also reinforced and exhibited the patriotism in every Vietnamese.
